Which Blu-ray Discs Have Dolby Atmos?

It's no secret that we're fans of

Dolby Atmos

here at Big Picture Big Sound. When I

first heard Atmos

at Dolby's Labs in San Francisco, I was impressed. Earlier this year, Ian White also gave the

home version of Dolby Atmos

a listen and left equally optimistic about the future of home theater sound. The object-based sound encoding/decoding format has been used successfully in theaters to provide an intensely immersive surround sound experience on several hundred movies and TV shows, including blockbusters like

Gravity

,

Godzilla

,

Edge of Tomorrow

,

Guardians of the Galaxy

and many more.


And now Dolby Atmos is available for home use, via a selection of

Dolby Atmos-enabled receivers

, preamps, soundbars and speakers. It has also been included in loads of Blu-ray Discs and 4K UHD Blu-ray Discs, courtesy of extensions to the existing Dolby TrueHD codec. We've heard it will also be coming to streaming services such as VUDU and possibly Amazon Prime Video and Netflix via the Dolby Digital Plus codec.

[update: all of this happened; Dolby Atmos is also available on Disney+, HBOMax and AppleTV+.]

We've also gone on record

calling the studios to task

for being slow to release new titles in the Dolby Atmos format for home use. We're not sure what, exactly, they're waiting for. Physical media sales have been on the decline for the past few years and something like Dolby Atmos can stem the tide and get people excited about buying movies again. Also, Dolby Atmos is backwardly compatible. If you play an Atmos-enabled Blu-ray Disc through a non-Atmos receiver, you get the standard Dolby TrueHD track. It even works with existing Blu-ray players so there's no need to run out to buy a new player.

The first batch of Dolby Atmos-enabled Blu-rays probably won’t win a lot of Oscars, but they provide great home theater demo material.
