Not ready to ditch your old speakers for the magic of Dolby Atmos? PSB Speakers wants you to tweak that audio just a little bit, by adding in Imagine XA.
Imagine XA are Dolby Atmos-enabled speaker modules, which are designed to fit atop PSB’s Imagine X floorstanding and bookshelf speakers. It should be noted that although this product was technically made to sonically integrate with other Imagine speakers, you could squeeze it on top of other flat speakers as well. Adding them into any existing audio setup will allow listeners to experience the height effects of Dolby Atmos configurations, from 5.1.2 to 7.1.4 and beyond.
In case you aren’t familiar with Dolby Atmos, know that it is an “object-based” audio format. That basically means that instead of assigning all audio to specific channels in your home theater setup, Dolby Atmos can treat certain sounds as “objects” that can move virtually anywhere within a hemisphere of sound: left, right, front, back — and even above the listener.

PSB used some of the company’s flagship speaker models as inspiration for creating the Imagine XA’s custom-designed drivers. It also has titanium dome tweeters with ferrofluid cooling and a neodymium magnet structure, with woofers made of clay/ceramic reinforced injection-molded polypropylene cones. The Imagine XA even has 5-way gold-plated binding posts.
“Dolby Atmos takes home cinema sound to a completely new level by adding the third dimension of height to the 2-dimensional front/back left/right 5.1 sound mix.” stated Paul Barton, founder and chief designer of PSB Speakers. “Our team worked closely with Dolby engineers to meet and exceed their specs which when properly implemented can move ‘sound objects’ like the sound of a bird in a tree above or the swoosh of an arrow past your face, delivering moving audio around the room with pinpoint accuracy. We believe the effect of the Imagine XA is totally convincing and really elevates the Home Cinema experience to new heights.”
PSB Speakers will make the Imagine XA available in a simulated black ash finish, with wall mount brackets and anti-slip strips. It should start shipping sometime in March 2016, priced at $499 per pair.
