Sony’s PS5 next gen gaming console is a holiday hit again this year, with most stores selling out their supplies as soon as they get them in. If you’ve been able to snag one, you may have noticed the built-in storage is relatively light. The PS5 has 875 GB of on board storage, with only about 670 GB usable to store all your games, apps, game data and video clips. Fortunately there are options for those who want to beef that up.
Seagate recently introduced the FireCuda 530 Solid State Drive (SSD), in sizes from 500 Gigabytes (GB) up to 4 Terabytes (TB). With the optional built-in heatsink option, the FireCuda 530 is a qualified “drop-in expansion” for the PS5 Console. We spoke with a Seagate rep last week in New York at Pepcom’s Holiday Spectacular show. “We hear from many gamers that they’re running out of space on their consoles,” said Greg Belloni, Senior Lead of Product PR at Seagate. “With the FireCuda 530, PS5 owners can literally plug and play to get more storage, without any DIY modifications or potential warranty issues. The built-in heatsink assures that gameplay doesn’t suffer from any thermal throttling and the drive read/write speed of up to 7300 MB/s exceeds Sony’s own specifications so players won’t experience any lag in gameplay.”
The FireCuda 530 with heatsink is available in the following sizes: 500GB ($159.99), 1TB ($259.99) and 4TB ($999.99). You can also buy a bare drive and add your own heat sink but this option requires care as you have to make sure the heatsink meets the tight size constraints of the PS5 expansion slot.
In technical terms, the FireCuda 530 is a high-speed Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD card using the PCIe interface. It installs into the PS5’s internal expansion slot with just a couple of Philips head screws.
If you’re looking for a cheaper option, Seagate also offers an external USB 3.0 hard drive that’s compatible with both the Sony PS4 and PS5. The Seagate Game Drive is available in both 2TB ($109.99) and 4TB ($149.99). Although it’s not as fast as the internal drive option, it can be useful for offloading games and media from the internal drive, and it allows you to bring your data and games on the road with you.
