All great films and all audience favorites spawn sequels. It’s inevitable. And so it is with “The Human Centipede (First Sequence)”. Its sequel, “The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence)” has accomplished the near-impossible: it is creepier than the original. In the first flick a crazed scientist sews three human beings together by attaching one person’s lips to the rectum of the person in front of them in the chain. If you are already on the verge of losing your lunch, you might as well stop reading now.
In the second installment, our lead is Martin (Laurence E. Harvey), a particularly odd-looking mall security guard, who is obsessed with watching the first “Centipede” flick over and over and over, while gratifying himself. Martin is not particularly bright but he is determined to also sew people together. He lacks the surgical aptitude but what he lacks in brains, he more than makes up for in determination.
Martin starts attacking people in the garage of his building until he has a dozen people ready for his experiment. Without getting too gory in my description, let me tell you that his lack of surgical acumen makes this procedure even more barbaric than the original. There were probably four or five occasions I had to look away from the screen. It is brutal.
Director Tom Six directed both “Centipedes” and, despite their both being beyond bizarre, I have to admit that Six is a talented director, but he must be one demented human being. The problem with Part II is that it lacks a little bit of the dark humor of the first, or perhaps the first one over-prepared me for this one, in effect removing some of its shock value.
When I exited the first one I was speechless, but was a grudging admirer of what I had just witnessed. When I exited number 2, I was once again speechless but slightly less impressed. Six enjoys torturing his audience and if that is something you look for in a film, you should not miss this creepy, crawling centipede.
