CinemaNow is still going strong. Now, you could say they are going even stronger, thanks to the muscle of Best Buy.
Best Buy just made the announcement that they will use RoxioNow technology to deliver CinemaNow’s streaming content, providing “same-day instant access to new release movies and TV shows.”
Let’s get one thing straight: Don’t expect to download a copy of Iron Man 2 — not through this service, anyway. The announcement is slightly misleading, but we are assuming that Best Buy will use the service to provide access to rentals on the same day and date as the Blu-ray/DVD release.
This is just another sign that retailers want a piece of the action that’s going on in content delivery. Earlier this year, Walmart announced they had bought VUDU. It makes sense. After all, when was the last time you made an actual trip to Best Buy to buy a movie?
Whether it was last week or last year, this perk means there’s little reason to leave the house — at least for entertainment purposes. Best Buy initially plans to launch the service on select LG Blu-ray players, HDTVs, and home theater systems. It will also be available online, with plans to branch out later this year to Best Buy’s Insignia brand and other devices. Using the PC or another compatible device, users can search and purchase premium content.
“At LG, we’re committed to enriching in-home entertainment by delivering the ultimate HD viewing experience and limitless content options,” said Peter Reiner, senior vice president, marketing, LG Electronics USA, Inc. “Best Buy, through its compelling CinemaNow service, will provide customers with one of the most interactive entertainment options available making it easy for people to access their favorite content using LG’s NetCast Entertainment Access feature simply from the remote.”
While Best Buy and LG have yet to match up CinemaNow with specific devices, it appears that LG is advertising this as part of the NetCast service. If that’s the case, here are a few of our favorite NetCast-enabled devices:
