Now you have yet another reason to invest in a really good home theater. Dolby just announced a deal that would make Lionsgate the fifth company to back Dolby Vision. The studio is planning several releases for home use that will include both new and catalog titles mastered in Dolby Vision and mixed in Dolby Atmos.
Dolby Vision is a proprietary form of HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology, which also has a wide color gamut. HDR allows video content to have more steps between the blackest black and the whitest white, which means you can capture high-contrast scenes, such as sunsets, starfields, street lamps and more, all with much greater realism. Dolby Atmos gives that viewing experience a boost by allowing sound to move all around the room — including overhead.
Neither side has mentioned how consumers will experience these enhanced titles (streaming, disc, or both). However, Dolby says that the material is being made with Dolby Vision-enabled TVs and Dolby Atmos-enabled audio products in mind. Dolby previously announced deals with MGM, Universal, Sony, and Warner Bros.

“Dolby’s commitment to enabling spectacular experiences is realized through this collaboration that combines our industry-leading audiovisual technologies and Lionsgate’s incredible pipeline of exciting titles,” said Curt Behlmer, SVP of content solutions and industry relations at Dolby Laboratories. “With this development, Dolby continues to enhance entertainment by giving people the ability to enjoy movies with stunning visuals and immersive object-based audio that draws them into the story on-screen in the comfort of their own homes.”
Another piece of information that’s missing? What titles we can expect. Lionsgate plans to announce a slate of Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos titles in the coming months.
